February events round-up

She17 6 Feb

She17 returned on Friday night with another great  evening of acoustic music from women of North/East London.

Opening the show with a luscious rendition of Oh Susanna were The Be Good Tanya, Serena, Leslie and Jane (pictured above).  They were followed by the welcome return of  Jessie Godwin who’s rendition of True Colours moved me to tears.

She17 debs Sam, Dee and Alice, (a local duo and their guitar) wowed the audience with their three song set, before Sam Kurt returned to her spiritual home with more fine covers and a great song of her own called “unconditional.”

After the break we were treated to some loop station magic by Theresa Elflein, who followed this with two powerful guitar and vocal based numbers.

Local songwriters SULK then took to the floor with three songs from their new 5 song EP which were the title track Ghost  of A Girl, the temperature appropriate Avalanche and Petits Mouchoirs.

Lady President headlined with a tight five song set of four originals and one cover.  They started with the octave jumping Uh Oh, then moved onto Bad Boy with it’s  Pixie-esque bass line. LP then introduced the genre of prog to She17 through the  frog percussion and guitar based Willing Machine, before belting out what is likely to  be their first single, My Kingdom. The evening closed on their cover of  Old Welsh Song (Joan Baez) where a build up of melodica, harmonica and Casio-tone mini keyboard combined with guitars and vocal harmonies.

A big thanks to all who braved the cold and came along to one of our quieter nights in terms of audience numbers, but probably our finest in terms of quality of performers. Thanks again to Ruby, Sarah and Donna for doing the door.  To make She17 sustainable, so we can cover our venue  hire and running costs, we will definitely be looking to program acts who can bring a few friends with them in future.

In the meantime She17 has a 30 minute slot at a really important local community event on 21 February https://roomso4own.wordpress.com/  Sam, Dee and Alice, Samantha Kurt and a few other acts will be doing an acoustic showcase.   A Taste of Rooms of Our Own is at Harmony Hall E17 7BY.
